An aspiring pediatrician and Southern Utah University student is one step closer to being named Miss America as a sold out Heritage Center in Cedar City watched Monica Workman, a junior Biology major from Houston, Texas, crowned the new Miss SUU February 6.

Workman was crowned by Timian Yoshimoto, last year's Miss SUU, after a night of performances from the SUU Polynesian Club and a Native American performance by Crystal Willie, the 2008 Miss SUU Native American. Swimsuit, evening wear, and on-stage interview of contestants was highlighted by Workman's performance of a classical ballet to "Minuetto Allegretto" from Mozart’s Symphony No. 39.

Workman will now prepare for the next phase of the pageant, the Miss Utah competition, and hopes to spend the next year busy with more than just further pageant preparation, saying of her aspirations, "My platform is 'Be your own kind of beautiful,' and I hope to inspire those from every walk of life to reflect their true inner beauty."

Workman is the daughter of Darin and Christine Workman and has already shown her dedication to the University by serving as a presidential ambassador, freshman orientation leader and music director for SUU's Power 91 radio station. She has also traveled to France with SUU's Study Abroad program.

Deniece Allred, administrative assistant for student involvement and leadership and the coordinator of this year's Miss SUU pageant, reflected on the experience saying, "I hope the young ladies who competed were able to grow and learn from this experience. I hope they were pleased with how they portrayed themselves to the community. Those that participated in the entertainment really put on an amazing show and truly portrayed SUU in the best light."

First runner up to Workman’s Miss SUU title was awarded to Marissa Larson, a nursing major from Arlington, Arizona, and the daughter of Buck & Christine Larson. Second runner up honors went to Linz Hansen, an ASL deaf studies major from Twin Falls, Idaho, and the daughter of Randy & Kathy Hansen.
