SUU to Discuss Liberal Education Objectives

As Southern Utah University considers the possibility of becoming the state’s designated Liberal Arts and Science University, the campus and local communities need to explore what it means to have an invigorated and practical liberal education for the 21st century. 

To this end, SUU's Faculty Senate is sponsoring two open forums to address liberal education. The forums will take place next Thursday, December 10, at 2 p.m. and Friday, December 11, at 10 a.m. in the Sterling Church Auditorium and are open to SUU's academic community as well as the Cedar City public. 

Dr. Jack Newell, former dean of the Liberal Education Program at the University of Utah and president of Deep Springs College and Dr. James Faulconer, professor of philosophy at Brigham Young University, will speak at the forums. Both will address the issue of "Liberal Education: Responding to the Challenges of the 21st Century." 

Dr. Newell will present a historical perspective on higher education and what it means to be educated in the 21st century, while Dr. Faulconer will address liberal education and its challenges in higher education. 

Such discussions are timely, as SUU Provost Brad Cook recently announced his intentions to press forward in distinguishing the institution as the state’s sole liberal arts university after completing a comprehensive analysis of the University’s academic strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (a SWOT analysis); conducting multiple campus forums; and participating in countless discussions with the University’s faculty, staff and leaders.
