Rain or Shine, Sunfest to Unite T-Birds in Celebration

With the end of the 2009-10 school year and the Thunderbird Awards just around the corner, SUUSA and the Student Activities Board will sponsor Sunfest this Wednesday through Saturday in one last effort to bring the campus together in celebration.

Slated for April 14-17, Sunfest will provide four major activities to students and the community, all leading up to the much-anticipated Thunderbird Awards ceremony. Rain, shine, or in our case, snow, all events are free and open to the public.

The week’s festivities will begin with a concert by Rootdown, a young band combining pop, rock and reggae music, in the Ballroom this Wednesday, April 14, at 7 p.m.

Following the concert, Thursday’s night’s fun will come in the form of “Get Rec’d,” an evening of amateur recreational competitions, including a dodge ball tournament, a diving contest and dance for all thanks to a live DJ. Get Rec’d will begin at 6 p.m. in the J.L. Sorenson PE Building.

Thursday night’s competitions are the perfect warm-up to the annual Iron County Relay for Life hosted on SUU’s campus each year, an overnight walk-a-thon.

This year’s Relay for Life is set for Friday, April 16, in the Eccles Coliseum. Walking will begin at 5 p.m. and will continue through early Saturday afternoon, with live music, contests, inflatable toys and tribute ceremonies to pass the time as team’s walk with purpose, raising funds for cancer research. Whether part of an official team or just stopping by, all are welcome to join in the fun.

Finally, the week culminates on Saturday, April 17, with the highly anticipated Thunderbird Awards. This year, says Emily Burt, entertainment director for SUUSA, the Thunderbird Awards are being “revamped” and could be considered the “Oscars of SUU.”

The T-bird Awards have been on campus for 60 years, since they first became a tradition in 1950. A formal event, the evening of awards recognizes the accomplishments and contributions of students, faculty, staff and community members. Free and open to the public, the 2010 Thunderbird Awards will be in the Randall L. Jones Theatre at 7 p.m.

With high hopes for this year’s Thunderbird Awards, and with excitement for the activity-filled week, the campus community is looking forward to Sunfest with anticipation. Here’s hoping the weather cooperates.
