On Homecoming weekend, friends, alumni, students and employees of Southern Utah University will enjoy a celebration unlike any other in the school’s history to usher in a rising future for the Thunderbird community.Past, present and future T-Birds and friends are all invited to enjoy the free outdoor party on the Upper Quad, complete with food, live music and fireworks on Friday, September 16, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The celebration will kick off the public phase of the largest fundraising campaign in University history, which will chart an impressive course for campus enhancement and growth.
With four featured musicians and Utah Shakespeare Festival favorites Brian Vaughn and David Ivers serving as masters of ceremonies, the evening promises great entertainment in an informal but enthusiastic environment that will set the tone for Southern Utah University moving forward.
Music will run throughout the evening and will include performances by Kurt Bestor with the SUU Symphony Orchestra, Peter Breinholt, and the Joe Muscolino Band, all leading up to a special announcement from SUU President Michael T. Benson about the University’s future at 9:45 p.m.
Following Benson’s announcement, guests will enjoy a celebratory fireworks display over the Upper Quad — the heart of SUU’s campus.
Refreshments will be served throughout the evening. Outdoor, grass seating is free and open to all friends of the University. Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket or beach chair to best enjoy all the night’s performances and festivities.
Following the fireworks display, SUUSA will host an afterparty for T-Bird students and interested alumni, which will feature You Tube sensation and musician Tyler Ward. The afterparty will include music, dancing and refreshments and will run to Midnight.
If that weren’t enough, the University will be giving away a $1000 scholarship to one lucky student in attendance.
“The Future is Rising” Scholarship will be awarded just before the fireworks at 10 p.m. Students must be present with valid student I.D. to collect a drawing ticket and, if selected, the prize. Tickets for the free drawing will be distributed from 9-9:45 p.m. at the information tent on the northwest corner of the Upper Quad.
Additionally, all faculty and staff in attendance will have the opportunity to win an Apple iPad. Free drawing tickets will be distributed from 7:30-8 p.m. The drawing will be held shortly thereafter. The winner must be present — ticket in hand — to collect his or her prize.
All Friday night festivities are free and open to the campus community and its friends and supporters, promising a full night of entertainment and pride for all that is to come of SUU’s rising future.
