After a successful inaugural season during the 2010-11 school year, SUU will again sponsor a series of weekly one-hour sessions presented by outdoor experts designed to highlight outdoor opportunities and information. The Outdoor Education Series (OES) is a community outreach program that will include topics ranging from details in the life of an outdoor adventure guide, to red rock adventures, to a unique high school outdoor education program. Presenters include SUU faculty and staff as well as public lands administrators and members of the community.
Admission is free to all sessions. The first session begins September 8, 2011, as Dr. Briget Eastep will kick off the series highlighting the brand new freshman outdoor wilderness program, with a presentation of “SUU Wilderness Adventure and Pacesetters: Leadership in the Outdoors”. Sessions will be offered each week for 12 weeks on Thursdays from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the SUU Outdoor Center.
This semester, two sessions will be jointly offered with the Biology Seminar Series highlighting venomous snakes as well as sharks.
The lecture and activity series will also complement the current Convocation schedule that offers a “Feast of Ideas.” The Outdoor Education Series is also now a Convocation requirement.
The OES was initially organized to improve access to outdoor information and opportunities for SUU students, faculty, staff and the local community. Increasing the outdoor experience is a primary institutional goal at SUU as it seeks to take advantage of its location among scenic state and national parks, monuments and public lands.
Over the past few years SUU has developed its SUU Outdoors program, built the Challenge Course, began to offer the four-year degree in Outdoor Recreation in Parks and Tourism, installed an indoor climbing wall and offered many outdoor student and community activities.
The OES is sponsored by the Outdoor Recreation in Parks and Tourism program, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and SUU Convocations. The Fall 2011 OES schedule is available online through suu.edu (link below).
