From an art exhibition showcasing vistas within the Dixie National Forest to screenings of the acclaimed documentary, "Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and Land Ethic for Our Time," Southern Utah University celebrates Earth Day with a remarkable series of events from Thursday, April 19 through Saturday, April 21. All of the events are free and the general public is encouraged to attend.
The highlight of the Earth Day festivities will be a special exhibition entitled "Into the Woods: A Painted Diary of Dixie National Forest" by Arlene Braithwaite. Southern Utah University’s Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery offers a chance to see the culmination of the work done by the well-known regional artist who was commissioned by the Dixie National Forest, USDA Forest Service to depict four breathtaking landscapes within the forest. With so many incredible vistas within the forest, Ms. Braithwaite created 20 works based on the landscapes. This special exhibit will be featured in newly-created exhibit space in SUU’s Hunter Conference Center on the second floor. The show opens on Thursday, April 19, 2012 with a reception at 6pm. The exhibit continues through Saturday, August 25, 2012. The gallery’s hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., excepting holidays and special events in the Conference Center. Admission is free and the general public is encouraged to attend.
An inspiring documentary about one man’s vision for future ecological challenges, "Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time," depicts the impact of the legacy of Aldo Leopold, considered by many as the father of wildlife management and of the United States’ wilderness system. The film explores Aldo Leopold’s life in the early part of the twentieth century and the many ways his land ethic idea continues to be applied all over the world today. Green Fire is a production of the Aldo Leopold Foundation, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Center for Humans and Nature. The film shares highlights from Leopold’s life and extraordinary career, explaining how he shaped conservation in the twentieth century and still inspires people. Not to be missed, the film will be shown twice at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, at the Great Hall in SUU’s Hunter Conference Center. Following each screening, there will be a discussion about environmental issues in our region. The screenings are free and open to the public.
On Friday, April 20, everyone is encouraged to celebrate additional Earth Day activities run through the Center for Sustainability by visiting the free fair which will be held on the campus’ upper quad from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. The family friendly fair will feature many interactive projects for youth, free giveaways, informational booths, including one from the Forest Service.
On Saturday, April 21, there will be two guided hikes led by SUU students in the Outdoor Recreation in the Parks and Tourism Program into the Dixie National Forest. One hike will be to the Silver Rim Trail in Leeds and the other will be to Lions Mouth. Participants are asked to meeting at 10 a.m. at the SUU Recreation Center. Bring water, snacks and provide own transportation (but carpool if possible). Please contact the SUU Outdoor Recreation Center at 435-865-8704 for additional information.
These free events have been made possible through the efforts of Arlene Braithwaite and members of the USDA Forest Service, Southern Utah University's Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery, Center for Sustainability, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Performing and Visual Arts and Outdoor Recreation in Parks and Tourism Program.
