In keeping with Southern Utah University’s commitment to hands-on, experiential learning, the university has augmented its base of resources to include one of the largest collections of news history in the world—the NBC News archive.
The program, aptly named NBC Learn, taps into a database of news stories that reach as far back as the 1920s. Media formats have changed throughout the years but with the advent of NBC Learn, over 12,000 of those stories are now available in digital format in a vast but highly organized online database.
NBC Learn is the educational arm of NBC News, dedicated to providing resources for students, teachers and lifelong learners. The online resources that NBC Learn has created for the education community leverages nearly 80 years of historic news coverage, documentary materials and current news broadcasts.
This innovative and collaborative teaching mechanism will enable faculty to access archived news articles, photos, videos and other media with a simple click of the mouse. Materials are carefully tailored to meet state educational standards and feature some of the most notable news figures in history such as Tom Brokaw, Tim Russert and John Chancellor.
The NBC Learn database can be accessed by students, faculty and staff, both on campus and off, through Canvas or My SUU Portal. In an effort to facilitate greater use of the resource throughout the community, the University has sponsored a gift subscription to NBC Learn for the Iron County School District.
“Our partnering with NBC Learn gives our faculty and staff access to materials that will enhance our ability to teach and our students to learn in ways we have never utilized before,” said SUU’s President Michael Benson. “Further, our making these resources available to our surrounding schools is evidence of SUU’s commitment to ensuring the best possible educational experience for all.”
‘NBC LEARN K-12’ and ‘NBC LEARN HIGHER ED’ give students and teachers access to thousands of video clips from the NBC News archives, including great historic moments – from the Great Depression to the Space Race to the latest political coverage. NBC Learn also offers primary source materials, lesson plans and classroom planning resources and additional text and image resources from our content partners.
Training sessions for faculty and staff will take place during August under the direction of Dr. Kyle Bishop, Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning. Those wishing to give the service a try in the meantime may contact Jon McNaughtan at 435-865-8770 or jonmcnaughtan@suu.edu to arrange a webinar session.
