Supporting Students in the Military

Southern Utah University is proud to announce a renewed partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to give tuition assistance to active members of the military.

Aid has always been given to military service members at SUU, but when the DoD issued a new memorandum of understanding in January of 2012, SUU chose to give comparable aid directly to service members instead of utilizing federal tuition assistance because of cost effectiveness.

“In the past,” explained John Allred, university registrar, “the University chose not to sign a memorandum of understanding with the DoD because it was deemed more cost effective to internally subsidize the education of those active service members who qualified for federal tuition assistance.”

With a new and revised memorandum of understanding through the DoD now in place, SUU has signed the document and meets all requirements to give tuition assistance through the individual branches of the military to active members.

Signing the new memorandum of understanding, SUU is regarded as a partner school with the Department of Defense, and programs will be routinely evaluated to ensure requirements and standards are being met.

With more than 90 percent of ROTC members at SUU receiving federal tuition assistance, Sergeant First Class Brent Bergner of SUU ROTC said, “This gesture speaks volumes about the University’s commitment to our women and men in uniform, furthering their education and making them better able to serve our community, state and nation.”

Benefits and tuition assistance for veterans are separate and are not affected by the signing of this new memorandum of understanding.
