Southern Utah University will host the final Western Athletic Conference Gymnastics Championship on Saturday night at 6 p.m. in the Centrum Arena. The WAC will no longer be sponsoring gymnastics after this season because of conference realignments.

Southern Utah will enter the weekend coming off its best team total of the year in a 196.200 victory over Iowa, San Jose State and Ball State last Friday. Senior Caitlin Kennedy captured two individual titles on senior night with a 9.850 on beam and a 39.275 in the all-around. The Thunderbirds are currently ranked No. 34 in the nation and will look to score another 196-plus this weekend to secure a spot into the NCAA Regional meets on April 6. The T-Birds need to finish the year with a top-36 ranking to claim a regional berth.

SUU is currently ranked third amongst the six teams in the WAC this year with a 195.145 season average, trailing Denver and Boise State with season averages of 196.470 and 195.785, respectively. Freshman Natalie Trejo is the highest ranked individual in the conference for SUU — No. 4 on the balance beam with a season average of 9.815.

SUU in Previous WAC Championships

Southern Utah University has a pair of individual WAC champions on its roster as Caitlin Kennedy won the 2010 balance beam title and Alyssa Click captured back-to-back individual titles on the uneven bars in 2011 and 2012. Click will be unable to defend her titles after suffering a season-ending knee injury in 2013.

The team finished third at the 2012 WAC Gymnastics Championship, scoring a 195.025. Denver claimed the championship that year with a 196.350.

Southern Utah University last hosted the WAC Gymnastics Championship in 2007, finishing in second place with a 195.225. Sacramento State won the team title that year with a 195.275.
