Former Southern Utah University basketball player Ray Jones Jr. has signed a contract to play in the upcoming season with the defending German Pro-B League champion Schwelmer Baskets.

Jones, who finished his playing career at SUU in 2012, signed with MBK Handlova of the Slovakian League last year but saw that opportunity cut short by a season-ending ankle injury suffered in the first game of the year.

“I was really disappointed last year but I’ve worked hard, my injury is completely healed and now I’m ready to go again,” he said. “I’m excited for the opportunity to go play in one of the best leagues in Europe.”

The Little Rock, Ark. native, who was named SUU’s Male Athlete of the Year for 2011-12, led SUU in assists, steals, field goal percentage and minutes played that season. He averaged 4.5 assists and 1.2 steals and finished the year with a .348 field goal percentage from 3-point range. He played an average of 32.8 minutes per game and scored at a 9.9 points-per-game clip. Jones also pulled down 4.0 rebounds per game, which ranked third on the team.

He finished the 2011-12 season with 140 assists, the 10th highest single-season total in SUU history, and his 259 career assists rank seventh all-time at Southern Utah and third among players who spent just two seasons at the school.

Jones, who has spent the summer working out in Cedar City, departs for Germany on Thursday with training camp scheduled to begin Saturday. After completing a schedule of exhibition games, which begin in September, the League begins official competition in October.
