Come March 2014 when spring is beginning to shine, five lucky lady T-Birds will be migrating much farther than their typical flying patterns. Traveling 8,000 miles for free from Cedar City to Dubai, United Arab Emirates to the Dubai Women’s Conference (DWC).
The second time Southern Utah University has sponsored five female students to attend this international conference along with 60 young women from around the world. During the conference, students are paired with other students in attendance for five days of learning, sharing and growing.
Just a few of the issues explored in the conference vary from year to year and include topics as diverse as inheritance under Sharia law, Arabic governance, promoting peace, and combating human trafficking.
In addition to attending lectures and speeches, students will share a dorm with Dubai Women’s College student and have the opportunity to explore the area through different field trips. Kurt Harris, director of SUU’s Sargon Heinrich Global Engagement Center, stated that the previous year students road camels in the desert.
Harris said of this remarkable opportunity, “This is a chance for SUU students to connect with other women around the world and discuss issues related to women. The conference offers experiential education that you cannot get in the classroom.”
Applications are now open for Lady T-Birds to apply to attend this conference free of charge. With no preference toward academic degree, Harris stated that he is looking for students that are intellectually and culturally curious, and open to new perspectives on the world and on themselves. He said, “We are hoping to be able to send students with diverse backgrounds, one each from SUU's five academic colleges.”
To apply, download the application form and follow the instructions. Forms must be submitted by December 10. Direct all questions about DWC and its application process to Kurt Harris at harrisk@suu.edu.
