Bringing together eight students with various religious beliefs, the Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics & Public Service will host the What’s Your Truth religious panel between an atheist, agnostic, Wiccan, Muslim, Buddhist, Roman Catholic, Seventh Day Adventist and Hindu Wednesday, February 19 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Living Room, within the Sharwan Smith Student Center.
The moderated discussion conducted by Leavitt Center students will conclude at 7 p.m., following this free and public event pizza will be handed out to attendants and give each person to discuss with panelists questions about their individual set of beliefs until 7:30 p.m.
According to Leavitt Center Director Eric Kirby, this religious panel is not a chance to “debate on who is right and who is wrong, but to help students show the diversity of our student population and to be more informed and tolerant of those that are different.”
As part of the University’s annual Identity Week, the What’s Your Truth religious panel will be a time for students to discuss how their belief system has guided them to who they are and identify with.
Identity Week is a chance for Thunderbirds to showcase what distinguishing traits they have and how that makes each unique student a part of the SUU family.
As stated by event organizer Porter Sproul, sophomore studying communications, this week is a time to “show that each student does belong to SUU and that from the offset students can break from the stereotypes and be whoever they want to be.”
Other events included in Identity Week are a mural for all students to write, or draw, what identifies them. The mural is currently in the Living Room from now till Thursday, February 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Identity Week Fashion Show will be conducted Thursday, February 20 at 6 p.m. in the Great Hall. The event is open to any student to display what clothing identifies who they are and what they believe, to sign up contact Porter Sproul at (702) 624-7484.
