A time where innovative ideas are celebrated, where unprecedented research is applauded and ultimately where creative thinking is shared with all of campus. This feast of ideas will be found at the second annual Festival of Excellence on April 8, 2014. But the time is now to submit your ideas, research and thoughts to be included in this year’s campus-wide academic conference.

Initiated by Provost Brad Cook last year, he and other administrators wanted to bring together the noteworthy research, artwork, poetry and scholarly explorations of SUU faculty, staff, students and community members in one day.

“What got us thinking about creating the Festival of Excellence, was that we noticed that we were not celebrating enough the talent that is hosted on our campus,” explained Cook. “We have faculty writing books, staff engineering projects, and students publishing papers, but what are we doing on our campus to recognize that?”

Cook went on to explain that this campus-wide academic conference is essential to preparing students for future careers.

He said, “Students must realize that knowing how to communicate a thought is essential to succeeding professionally and the presenting at the Festival of Excellence will give students that vital preparation.”

The Festival of Excellence is for anyone in any niche of study. It is for the artist and their sculpture, the scientists with their beaker and the philosopher with their research.

University administrators have set aside the entire day of April 8 to dedicate to the Festival of Excellence and have asked all faculty members to incorporate attendance at the Festival into their curriculum, as it’s a time for all Thunderbirds to celebrate scholarly and creative work conducted throughout the institution.

But this isn’t just for students and University employees, the Festival of Excellence is also open for alumni and community members to submit their ideas and then present at the Festival.

Submissions are due February 21 by 5 p.m. Full presentations do not have to be ready till the day of the event. All that is required for submission is a description of the presentation.
