Three SUU students traveled to Nashville, Tenn. to sharpen their business skills in national competition that resulted in top recognition over business students from across the country.
Ashley Amundsen, Jake Amundsen and Brant Parker competed as members of the largest and oldest collegiate student business organization at the Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) National Leadership Conference at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville on June 24–27. Featuring more than 50 business-related competitive events, the conference drew students from across the U.S. and overseas, hoping to showcase their talents and stand out from the pack of future business men and women. The three Thunderbirds did just that, bringing home top ten recognition for their work in website design, desktop publishing and community service.
The Amundsens earned fifth place in Desktop Publishing after developing three publications, judged by a panel of experts. The competition also included a written exam.
The pair also competed in the Web Design event by producing a fully functional web page and presenting their work to a panel of judges. Their web design and presentation was awarded tenth place.
Brant Parker competed in the Community Service Project event, presenting his leadership over the SUU PBL Chapter’s Teddy Bear Den ongoing service project, which garnered sixth place. The Cedar City Teddy Bear Den, in cooperation with the Utah Chapter of the March of Dimes, the Valley View Medical Center and the Cedar High School FBLA club, is a prenatal health promotion program for low-income pregnant women. It is designed to promote prenatal care participation and healthy behaviors during pregnancy and the first year of the infant’s birth. Teddy Bear Den clients earn points for maternity or baby care items through a variety of positive, health-promoting activities, such as attending prenatal care appointments, participating in prenatal education classes, etc. This year the Teddy Bear Den expanded its operations by partnering with the Valley View Medical Center to operate the Den before and after prenatal classes at the hospital. The Cedar High School FBLA club conducted community baby showers throughout the year to stock the Teddy Bear Den. The SUU PBL club provided volunteers to manage, schedule and operate the Teddy Bear Den.
The FBLA-PBL Community Service Project competition included both a pre-judged report and a presentation before a panel of three judges. The project was judged on the service provided to the community, member involvement, the project’s results and the quality of the report and presentation.
“I am so proud of these students. They worked very hard to apply their business skills to real-world situations. They had to polish their writing and presentation skills to impress a tough panel of judges who are experts in their field. Earning top ten finishes in these highly competitive events just shows what great students they are.” said Carl Templin, dean of the SUU School of Business and PBL Club Advisor.
Winners of all these highly competitive and prestigious FBLA-PBL awards were selected from among more than 250,000 students and advisers across the globe; as such, they represent the best and brightest of today’s rising business generation.
