Governor Gary R. Herbert appointed Southern Utah University student Bailey Bowthorpe on June 30 to serve as the 2015-2016 student representative for the Utah State Board of Regents.
Bowthorpe will act as liaison to the student-body presidents at the eight public colleges and universities in Utah, serving as their voice by providing the student perspective to Board of Regents deliberations.
SUU President Scott L Wyatt, a former Utah student regent, said, “I have had the opportunity to work with Bailey over the last 18-months while at SUU and I’m confident she will be a thoughtful and articulate member of the Board of Regents, as well as a powerful voice for all Utah students.”
Bowthorpe said she plans to work closely with student body presidents from each higher education institution in Utah in order to better serve all the students in the state of Utah. Her appointment marks the seventh time a SUU student served as the student regent.
“I intend to be educated on the issues that individual campuses are facing in order to effectively represent all students,” she said. “An aspect of this position that excites me is the possibilities to have an impact on higher education in Utah. I hope to be an advocate for the students in everything I do.”
During her tenure as student regent, Bowthorpe will focus on graduation rates. Her initiatives align with Utah’s 66 by 2020 goal. “My desire is for more students to realize the dream of a college education, and through the policy process that the regents participate in, I believe that more students will not only enroll, but successfully graduate from Utah colleges and universities,” she said.
Bowthorpe, earned her bachelor’s degree in strategic communication in 2014 from SUU. She is currently a graduate student in SUU’s Master of Public Administration program and serves in its Office of Marketing Communication. Her student leadership included serving as the SUU Student Association vice president of academics from 2013-2015. She worked in the policy-development and student advocacy efforts.
On a national level, Bowthorpe interned for former Congressmen Jim Matheson, in Washington D.C. during the summer of 2014.
