The Kappa Iota chapter of Sigma Chi at Southern Utah University is seeking to cure cancer during their annual Derby Days fundraising event. Derby Days is a weeklong event from October 5th through 9th where Sigma Chi chapters raise money for the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) located in Salt Lake City. SUU’s Kappa Iota chapter hopes to exceed last year’s donation of $10,000.
According to the Huntsman website, “Sigma Chi chapters from across the nation have stepped up to join Jon M. Huntsman, Sigma Chi brother and founder of HCI, to eradicate cancer.” Many of the Sigma Chi members and their families have been directly affected by cancer, the second leading cause of death in the United States.
Mitchell Hillyard, the president of the Kappa Iota chapter of Sigma Chi, is proud to support his fellow brother, Jon M. Huntsman. “It’s through the efforts of everyone, not just Sigma Chi’s, that we will finally see the end of the suffering which cancer brings,” said Hillyard.
Hillyard joined the fraternity in 2013 and wasn’t sure what to expect, but it soon became the cornerstone of his college experience at SUU. “It was great to be a part of something that pushed me to serve others and be bigger than myself.”
Arnold Nyatanga, a new member of Sigma Chi, said of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, “A few years ago I lost my grandmother to cancer, and she was one of the most important people in my life. Participating in Derby Days, and being a part of an organization which is fighting to end cancer once and for all is the best feeling.”
Jimmy Lea, the current advisor for the Kappa Iota chapter and a founding brother, said he is proud to be a member of Sigma Chi. “Being a member of a fraternity facilitated positive growth in professional, social and personal aspects of my life. I continue to be impressed with my brothers at SUU, and their hard work in bettering the world around them through service and philanthropy.”
During Derby Days, students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to participate in daily fundraising activities.
