Rhett Farrer, Jason Butikofer, Eric Packer, Andrew ParrishIntermountain Sports Medicine, a division of Intermountain Healthcare, has signed a three year contract with Southern Utah University’s athletic department to provide a certified athletic trainer for all SUU athletic and team events. Jason Butikofer, Director of Athletics for Southern Utah University, said, “With a strong focus on student athlete wellness, we are excited to partner with Intermountain Healthcare and subsequently elevate all aspects of our sports medicine vertical.  This strategic alignment will undoubtedly impact our program in the near term and beyond.”

Rhett Farrer, Intermountain Southwest Region Sports Medicine Manager, said, “Most athletics events don’t go without injury, and so properly addressing those injuries, and getting athletes back to the field of play in a safe manner is our highest priority. This new three-year agreement upgrades the current athletic training staff to four Intermountain athletic trainers.  These licensed athletic trainers will be assigned to cover SUU sports teams both on campus and on the road. SUU graduate assistants in sports medicine will also be hired in part-time roles so they’ll be able to continue their education and gain skills to help them in their profession.”

Ted Hugunin, Southwest Region Director of Intermountain Sports Medicine, said, “We’ve had a lot of SUU administrative support and Intermountain support, and that excellent partnership is what has helped bring this about.” Eric Packer, CEO at Intermountain Cedar City Hospital, added, “I am really excited about this relationship with SUU. I feel it’s going to be a definite win-win. I think it’s going to be very beneficial for the student athletes, it’s going to be beneficial for our community, for families, students, and the university at large.”

Ellen Treanor, Southern Utah University Executive Director of Brand Strategy, said, “We are excited for this new partnership, knowing it will significantly upgrade the student athlete experience. Both Intermountain Healthcare and SUU believe in partnerships to expand our contributions to the community. Intermountain’s expertise and resources will be a tremendous support to our athletes.”
