Lecturer Publishes Youth Fantasy Novel

Rosalyn Eves, a lecturer of English at Southern Utah University, has published her debut novel, Blood Rose Rebellion, the first book in a young adult fantasy trilogy.

The story follows the imaginary life of a 16-year-old nobel British girl in the 1800s whose lack of magical ability makes her an outcast. After she is sent to Hungary to live with her grandmother, she begins to discover that not all she’s been taught about magic and high society is true.

Eves spent years writing and researching about Europe to make her book as historically accurate as possible, with the addition of magic. Eves signed with an agent in December 2014, and sold her book to Knopf Publishing in February 2015. After two years of revisions, planning and editing, her hard work is paying off.

Publishing has been a long journey for Eves, as she’s dreamed of becoming an author since she was 11 years old. “Time went by and I wasn’t writing anymore,” she said. “At one point I realized if I didn’t start now, I was never going to achieve that dream.”

Eves joined a writing group for support. The group has five members, four of which work on the SUU campus. “Writing can be really difficult,” she said. “It’s a lifesaver to have people who give honest feedback and offer encouragement when times get tough.”

Eves advises all aspiring authors to keep writing, even if just a little bit every day. “Find a critique partner or a writing group,” she added. “Accountability and feedback go a long way.”

After she finishes her first trilogy, Eves has plans to continue writing. She’s hoping to finish a fantasy novel or two, and is considering writing a western influenced by the landscape of southern Utah.

“I write because the stories mean something to me,” said Eves. “I hope someday they’ll mean something to someone else too.”

The community is invited to attend an open house to celebrate the book March 29 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Main Street Books in Cedar City. Festivities will include a book signing, photo booth, prizes and book-inspired food.
