On Monday night, Stacie Webb was perfect.
The senior recorded the first 10 in the history of Southern Utah’s gymnastics program on beam in a meet against the BYU Cougars.
“To be honest, I didn’t really see it,” Webb said about the moment the score went up. “I just heard everyone around me screaming and I was getting a lot of hugs from everyone and people were crying, so I just assumed that was it. I did it.”
This mark replaced Webb’s previous high of 9.925.
“That’s really cool to see that young lady to that,” SUU head coach Scott Bauman said. “That’s been a long time coming.”
Unfortunately for the Thunderbirds, they fell to the Cougars of BYU 195.650-195.625.
The Thunderbirds started strong on bars, with Memory Shettles, Becky Rozsa and Tyly Bozzuto all hitting the 9.850 mark. Amber Heltemes wasn’t far behind, scoring a 9.825. As a team the T-Birds scored a 49.125 on bars.
When SUU moved to vault they were led by Virginia Brownsell, who scored a 9.850. Megan McBride and Autumn Jorgensen both hit a 9.825 for the T-Birds.
On floor the T-Birds were led by Madyson Blake-Howard, as the senior scored a 9.875. Autumn Jorgensen hit a 9.850 and Karen Gonzalez scored a 9.825 to help lead the way for SUU.
When the Thunderbirds moved to beam Jorgensen was first up, and scored a personal best 9.900 to get the team going. Kirsten Yee followed that up with a personal best of her own, as she hit a 9.925 in the second spot for the Thunderbirds. Webb was able to follow those scores with her perfect 10.
Jorgensen and Bozzuto both completed the all-around. Jorgensen hit a 38.725 and Bozzuto scored a 38.625.
For the first time this season Jorgensen competed on bars for the Thunderbirds, Gonzalez competed on vault and Kamryn Bayer competed on floor.
The Thunderbirds will now turn their attention to the MRGC Championships, that will take place in Logan, Utah, on Saturday. The meet is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
