Excessive student debt is the millstone that hangs around the neck of many college graduates. While a good education will pay out in the long run, extreme debt can affect your ability to buy a car, a home or save for retirement. Nationally, there are 45 million people who have collectively taken out more than $1.4 trillion in student loans. With the average student borrower owing $31,333 in debt, it is now more important than ever to select a college which offers an education that is both exceptional and affordable. Southern Utah University provides an education that meets both of these needs.
In a national survey of states with the lowest student debt per graduate, Utah sits comfortably at the top of the list. With an average debt of only $7,545 per graduate, Utah beat out Wyoming and Arizona which had an average of $11,420 and $11,564, respectively.
One reason Utah students have so little student debt is due to low tuition rates. With the support of the Governor and the Utah Legislature, the Utah State Board of Regents has worked to keep tuition rates as low as possible as part of their strategic plan to meet workforce demands.
Pell grants, work-study and smart borrowing also help Utah students avoid costly financial mistakes. StepUp to Higher Education, the Utah System of Higher Education’s outreach program, helps students learn about the different ways to pay for college and keep debt to a minimum.
In Utah, SUU is one of the top three schools with the lowest average debt per student. In the Rocky Mountain Region, SUU is in the top four. Only 51% of students graduated with debt and the average amount of debt held by students totaled around $8,600. SUU has been recognized by the U.S. News & World Report as one of the schools it considers the Best in the West. The Princeton Review has listed SUU in its “Best Colleges: Region by Region” as one of America’s best value schools.
