Gas Leak Prompts Brief Street Closure

At approximately 12:20 p.m., a gas line owned by Dominion Energy was damaged near the new Southern Utah University Business Building. The gas leak has been isolated and any immediate danger has passed. Some Cedar City residents may be without gas for a short time while the line is being fixed.
The situation was handled quickly and efficiently by SUU Facilities Management and Dominion Energy. Precautionary measures were immediately taken. SUU Campus Police closed University Blvd. between 300 West and 800 West so work crews could access the area without interruption. As of 2:00 p.m., the road has been reopened.
After the line was damaged, a gas odor was reported in the area. SUU Facilities Management immediately evacuated the Leadership Engagement Center, Campus Call Center and the Business Building construction site. Gas was shut off to the J.L. Sorenson Physical Education Building. Individuals’ safety is SUU’s primary concern and Facilities is checking each building on campus for other possible concerns.
“I would like to compliment Cedar City Fire, SUU Police, Cedar City Police, and Dominion Energy for their quick response,” said Tiger Funk, Assistant Vice President for Facilities Management. “The issue was resolved without serious incident.”
The campus community should call Facilities Management if they detect a natural gas smell. Facilities can be reached at 435-865-8690.
Cedar City residents should call Dominion Energy for any questions or updates at 866-366-4357.
