Cedar City’s newest festival took place in September with an estimated 2,500 attendees converging in historical downtown for the first annual Cedar Music Fest.

Designed to feature live music, local artists and crafters, Cedar Music Fest is presented by
Southern Utah University’s Office of Community and Academic Enrichment (CAE). A new office at SUU, CAE was founded in 2017 to bring cultural experiences and community learning opportunities to southern Utah residents, along with world travel and professional development classes.

The new Cedar Music Fest had been in the works with several entities contributing time and effort in the initial planning stages, including; SUU Alumni and Community Relations, Cedar City and the Historic Downtown Economic Committee, Southern Utah Museum of Art, Southwest Tech, Cedar City/Brian Head Tourism Bureau and several of the businesses in downtown Cedar City who stepped up and pledged $2,350 in funds for the first event.

“We are very thankful to have such a supportive community,” said Jessica Burr, assistant director at SUU CAE. “From the businesses and organizations who wholeheartedly supported us, to the thousands who attended — it was a lot of fun for us and we hope to see the event grow next year.”

Cedar City councilman R. Scott Phillips said the city’s Historic Downtown Economic Committee had been looking for an event such as Cedar Music Fest, and the turnout shows a music festival was needed in the Festival City.

“This is just what we were looking for, something to draw more locals and tourists alike to the downtown area and see what the great merchants in the area have to offer,” he said. Cedar Music Fest featured two Seattle bands, and two from southern Utah, along with a jazz ensemble, several street musicians, artists, vendors, a free photo booth, and a food court on University Blvd. in downtown Cedar City.
