A.P.E.X. Events – SUU’s Premier Event Series – is celebrating Homecoming Week by featuring our Outstanding Alumnus, Julie Castle! Castle, has been recognized as a leader and voice of the national no-kill movement, and named by InStyle Magazine to their “Badass 50” list as one of the 50 top women in the country who speak up, show up and get things done. Her A.P.E.X. Event will be held on Sept. 26, at 11:30 AM in the Gilbert Great Hall.
Julie Castle was born and raised in Bountiful, Utah and graduated magna cum laude from Southern Utah University. After graduating Castle was planning on attending law school when she happened to visit Best Friends Animal Society. From that point Castle changed her life plans and began working at Best Friends Animal Society.
As the organization grew, in 2000, Castle led “No More Homeless Pets in Utah,” a statewide no-kill coalition led by Best Friends that comprised more than 160 rescue organizations, animal control agencies and veterinarians. During her six-year tenure, Utah achieved a 30 percent reduction in shelter deaths statewide.
During Castle’s time at Best Friends Animal Society she has created the society’s legislative team, lead marketing and communications, spearhead fundraising efforts, and then landed in the position of CEO. Her efforts have seen accomplishments and goals such as: fundraising growing from $60 million to $132 million, membership growing by 30 percent, a powerful goal to end the killing of dogs and cats in shelters across the country by 2025.
"The abilities and triumphs of SUU alumni can be found across the globe and Julie Castle shines brightly amongst her TBird family," said Dr. Lynn Vartan, director of A.P.E.X. Events. "Best Friends is a gem in our Utah community, and we are so excited to give this organization and Julie’s leadership the spotlight! Go SUU Alumni!”
