Salt to Saint bike relayOver the weekend of September 20-21, twenty of Southern Utah University’s faculty, staff, alumni, students, and friends participated in the annual Salt to Saint bicycle relay. The group cycled 429 miles across Utah from Salt Lake City to Saint George in a mere 24 hour period.

The twenty riders were organized into four cycling teams by Jared Tippets, SUU’s vice president for student affairs.

“There is a strong cycling community here in Cedar City and many of us work at SUU or are alums of SUU,” said Tippets. “We had so much fun riding together, all wearing our SUU cycling jerseys, and representing the T-Bird nation as we rode across the state.  We had so many people ask us about SUU and enjoyed sharing the good things happening here on campus. But, most importantly, we burned a few calories, strengthened friendships, and had a lot of fun!”

Participants included:

Team One

  • Jared Tippets, vice president for student affairs
  • Bill Heyborne, associate professor of biology
  • Nate Christian, director of executive design
  • Travis Wood, SUU alumni

Team Two

  • Niki Tippets, career advisor
  • Curtis Stevenson, SUU student
  • Joey DeGraff, director of creative design for SUU athletics
  • Shane Wood, friend of SUU

Team Three

  • Sarah Allen, assistant professor of family life and human development
  • Jason Ramirez, former dean of students
  • Curt Hill, director of counseling & psychological services
  • Derek Christensen, SUU alumni and accounting adjunct faculty member

Team Four

  • Brian Fullerton, director of recreation & wellness
  • Nate Porter, assistant director of recreation & wellness
  • Johnny Oh, director of global collaboration
  • Mike Miller, friend of SUU
  • Todd Tippets, friend of SUU
  • Scott Clark, friend of SUU
  • Gavin Brown, friend of SUU
  • Lance Brown, friend of SUU

“When I bought my first road bike about five months ago I had no idea how much fun I would have on it,” said Sarah Allen, assistant professor of family life and human development. “I have been welcomed by a great cycling community here at SUU and loved meeting and getting to know so many incredible people on our team as we road Salt to Saint. Cycling as a team is a lot like life- together we ride faster and further.”

SUU has a history of wellness. Just last year, Dr. Liz Olson finished 3rd in a 50k and President Wyatt’s team placed first in the Grand to Grand Ultra Marathon
