Marketing Communication Office Welcomes Two New Team Members

After an extensive national search, Southern Utah University is excited to welcome two new senior leaders, Director of Public Relations David Bishop and Director of Creative Services Chelsea Howells, to the Marketing Communications department. 

“David and Chelsea bring so much talent and experience to an already remarkable team of creative individuals,” said Nikki Koontz, executive director of marketing communication. “Their passion, enthusiasm, and knowledge about marketing, public relations, design and brand identity will help elevate our office and propel us forward as the University continues its rapid growth trajectory. We are lucky they are joining our T-Bird family.”

David BishopBishop began his role as the director of public relations in August 2019 and is responsible for all of SUU’s earned media attention and content curation. He works closely with the press to ensure the University’s unique stories are being shared with the goal to increase SUU’s national recognition. Part of Bishop’s responsibilities also include protecting the reputation of SUU by overseeing crisis communication. He is working to develop a public relations campaign and establish strong media relationships. 

“I’m excited to work at a university that values innovation and growth,” said Bishop. “Great things are happening at SUU, and I’m thankful to be a part of this university community.” 

Bishop joins the team after a two-decade career in media relations, working with former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, the Florida Lottery and Farmers Insurance. 

Chelsea HowellsBeginning her role as Director of Creative Services in November 2019, Howells will oversee the creative team which includes design, video, and photography. She is responsible for SUU’s visual identity, which includes maintaining and protecting the University’s brand and enforcing the school’s style guide. She will also provide creative direction for new marketing materials, website design and video and photography projects. 

“I’m thrilled and honored to be a part of the SUU brand,” said Howells. “This organization is full of passionate, intelligent people. Our values are strong and unique. I can’t wait to start collaborating and creating visuals to represent those values.” 

Howells joins the team after serving as an art director at Pattern and environmental designer at the Salt Lake City Public Library, Decorworx, and Swarm.

The Marketing Communication Office is a professional team of creators who define, elevate and protect the brand identity of SUU. Through engaging storytelling, the office reinforces the mission and vision of SUU, as well as provides a positive and interactive experience for the campus community.
