On April 1 a campus wide email was sent to all students about SUU's commitment to providing a safe environment for our students.
Subject: Equity & Inclusion During COVID-19
Dear SUU Community Members,
In the wake of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), around the country there have been incidents of racist, xenophobic, and harassing behaviors targeting international students and students of Asian ancestry. We are aware of incidents that have taken place on and off campus. The nature of these incidents includes inappropriate jokes, song lyrics, other derogatory comments, and physical assaults.
The Office of Equity and Inclusion and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion strongly condemn these behaviors as they do not reflect the mission and values of our community. Southern Utah University is committed to life-long learning and promoting an environment in which our students engage “in experiential education leading to personal growth, civic responsibility, and professional excellence.”
In a continued effort to be a dynamic teaching and learning institution, we wholeheartedly stand in solidarity with our students and community members. We encourage all community members to educate themselves on proper health and safety precautions concerning this disease.
Additionally, the following campus resources are available:
- Dean of Students
- International Student Services
- CAPS - Counseling & Psychological Services
- SUU Police Department
- Campus Health Notice: Coronavirus
Thank you for partnering with us to help make Southern Utah University a more welcoming and inclusive community.
Sincerely,
Schvalla R. Rivera, Ph.D. Assistant to the President for Equity and Inclusion
Joel Berrien, Jr., Ed.D. Director of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion
Scott L Wyatt, President
