Recognizing Outstanding Educators

Each year, Southern Utah University recognizes the outstanding educators at the university for their commitment to student success both in and outside of the classroom. This year, SUU is proud to honor 17 dedicated and driven individuals. Through various committee selections, these awards recognize the recipients' career in university service and their dedication to the institution.
Board of Trustees Award of Excellence
The most prestigious award given to faculty, the Board of Trustees Award of Excellence is intended to formally recognize the outstanding achievements of faculty and staff at SUU with a particular emphasis in teaching, scholarship, administration, innovation, and public service. Congratulations to this year’s recipients, Tyler Stillman, director of entrepreneurship and associate professor of marketing, and Scott Bauman, women's gymnastics head coach.
Outstanding Educator
The Outstanding Educator Award recognizes an individual, full-time faculty for demonstration of outstanding teaching effectiveness; scholarly activity; peer respect from fellow colleagues; sincere interest in students; and professional commitment and service to others and the University overall. Congratulations to this year’s recipient Scott Munro, associate professor of engineering.
Outstanding Educator for Inclusion and Diversity
The Outstanding Educator for Inclusion and Diversity Award celebrates outstanding individuals or groups that, engaging with other stakeholders and partners on campus, are working to increase and sustain diversity, inclusion, and equity at SUU. Congratulations to this year’s recipient Junice Acosta, assistant professor of Spanish.
Distinguished Service Award
The Distinguished Service Award is to recognize an individual, full-time faculty member for demonstration of distinguished service to the University and the greater community; a pattern of quality service; a variety of service efforts; efforts have increased the quality of some aspect of the University's mission; and a genuine interest in serving students, colleagues, and the University. Congratulations to this year’s recipient Earl Mulderink, professor of history.
Distinguished Scholarly/Creative Activity Award
The Distinguished Scholarly/Creative Activity Award recognizes three faculty members for distinguished academic achievement in scholarship, which is defined by scholarly and/or creative work that has been peer-reviewed and judged to be superior. Congratulations to this year’s recipients Kevin Stein, MAPC program director, Andrew Misseldine, associate professor of mathematics, and Corey Twitchell, assistant professor of German.
Distinguished Educator Award
This award is to recognize three individual, full-time faculty for distinguished teaching effectiveness; professional commitment; demonstrated interest in students; and service to others and the University overall. Congratulations to this year’s recipients Hala Swearingen, associate professor of illustration, Rachel Bolus, assistant professor of biology, and Laura June Davis, assistant professor of history.
Distinguished Faculty/Staff for Inclusion and Diversity
The Distinguished Faculty/Staff for Inclusion and Diversity Award celebrates an exemplar faculty member who is working collaboratively to build a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable climate on campus. Congratulations to this year’s recipients Angela Pool-Funai, MPA program director, and Schvalla Rivera, assistant to the president for diversity and inclusion.
Outstanding Service Award
Each year the Staff Association recognizes and honors two outstanding staff employees with the Outstanding Service Award. These awards recognize the recipients' career in university service and their dedication to the institution. Congratulations to this year’s recipients Teresa Andrews, administrative assistant for University Housing and Lance Jackson, communication technology engineer.
Distinguished Service Award
The Distinguished Service Award celebrates two staff members that have made extraordinary contributions to the work and learning environment at SUU, and have given service to the university above and beyond the scope of their position. Congratulations to this year’s recipients DeNean Petersen, clinic director for Counseling and Psychological Services, and Alison Adams, administrative assistant for the Provost’s Office.
Congratulations and thank you to all of SUU’s incredible staff and faculty for the dedication to the University and it’s students. SUU’s 2020 University Commencement ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2020.
