With current mandates in the State of Utah, students in the SUU Symphony Orchestra will be able to perform their concert via live stream on Wednesday, November 18, 2020, at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of Dr. Xun Sun. The performance can be viewed at https://youtu.be/0royoSXe16Y.
The safety of the students at SUU is of utmost importance to the faculty, staff, and the university as a whole. In order to comply with the safety protocols involved with the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Xun Sun split the students into two groups to make room for better spacing between musicians, allowing for social distancing as well as musicians wearing masks and covering the ends of their instruments where necessary. They will be indicated in the program by A-Day Orchestra and B-Day Orchestra.
The SUU Symphony Orchestra is comprised of instrumentalists from the entire campus and rehearses four hours per week. This group of dedicated musicians perform orchestral masterpieces from the standard symphonic repertoire. This year, they will feature songs from composers throughout the ages. Among those are George Frideric Handel, Igor Stravinsky, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Guy Berryman.
Appointed to his current academic position in 2001, Dr. Xun Sun is serving as Director of Orchestral Activities at SUU. As a tenured faculty member, his teaching duties include that of conducting the University Symphony Orchestra and String Ensemble. In addition, he teaches courses in Advanced Instrumental Conducting and Applied Instruction of Violin in the Music Department. Dr. Xun Sun has been named one of The 30 Professionals of the Year during 2015 by Musical America. He also received the 2015 Educator of the Year Award from American String Teachers Association Utah Chapter, and the 2014 Board of Trustees Award of Excellence by SUU.
