Esports club places third at Rocket League Tournament The Thunderbird Esports Club from Southern Utah University recently traveled to Las Vegas where they competed in a Rocket League tournament at the HyperX Esports arena taking third place overall.

Six students attended as competing members in one of the A or B teams. SUU’s B team took fifth place overall, while the A team took third place winning a cash prize. SUU Junior Triston Loveland served as the team coach.

“We have never competed at this venue before,” said Loveland. “The most challenging part was making sure to not be overwhelmed. It was a high-stress situation. But both our teams did amazing. My favorite part was sitting on the bleachers yelling my lungs out as our team scored on the opponents.”

The Thunderbird Esports Club hopes to participate in future events at the arena and is considering a Utah collegiate tournament hosted by HyperX in the future.

Thunderbird Esports is one of the fastest-growing clubs on SUU’s campus. The club is split into two sections. One section is dedicated to hosting fun gaming activities and running a competitive league within the University, and the other is composed of small teams that play competitively against other colleges and universities.

“If you even remotely like video games, competing, or hearing your friends and club-mates screaming for you to win while you're on a stage playing a game you love, then this is the club for you,” said Loveland. “If you like playing games, having a relaxing time, and just meeting people and making new friends, we are the club for that too. We have both competitive and casual games. It's not just a club, it's a community.”

Once fall semester begins, students interested in participating can attend the Thunderbird Esport club’s weekly meeting in the Student Center Living Room every Wednesday at 6 p.m. Interested students are also welcome to email the club at esports@suu.edu
