President Scott L WyattThe following letter was sent to campus from Southern Utah University President Scott L Wyatt on June 14, 2021.

Wyatt has accepted a new statewide role as the Senior Executive Director of Statewide Online Education within the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education and will be leaving SUU in August 2021.

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

After seven and a half years serving as your president, it is with mixed feelings that I announce my acceptance of a new statewide position within the Utah System of Higher Education commissioner’s office. This means I will be leaving my role as President of SUU later this summer. Commissioner Dave Woolstenhulme and the Board of Higher Education have asked me to design and implement a new unified statewide structure for all online degree programs offered by Utah’s eight colleges and universities. The commissioner's office will be sending out a press release today announcing my appointment.

I look forward to the challenge of this new assignment, but do so with a very heavy heart. I am immensely grateful for the years I’ve had at Southern Utah University and will miss my daily walks across our beautiful campus, the close collegial relationship with so many of you, and the energy I derive from engaging with our incredible students.

Being President of Southern Utah University has been a singular honor for me and living in Cedar City such a wonderful experience. I want to offer my deepest gratitude to each one of you for helping make my time here so rewarding. Kathy and I have enjoyed the best time of our lives together here with you. Part of our hearts will stay here forever.

Happily, I will be able to continue to support and stay engaged with SUU in my new role. Kathy and I will be back regularly to watch Shakespeare plays, cheer on the T-Birds, attend events like homecoming, and fill up our running shoes with red sand along the trails above town. Don’t forget, Kathy is an SUU alumna. We will remain supporters of the university and Cedar City for the rest of our lives.

I’m sure many of you have questions about the process moving forward. The system will appoint an interim president in the coming weeks and will immediately start the process of a presidential search. More information will be communicated to you as it becomes available.

I wish there was an adequate way to express my gratitude and appreciation for all of you. In an attempt to share some of those thoughts, I sat down with Dr. Steve Meredith last night and recorded a final episode of our podcast, which you can listen to here. We discussed a bit more about my new role and it gave me a chance to reflect on my time at SUU. Serving as President of this institution has been the honor of a lifetime and it has been an absolute privilege to work alongside each of you over the last seven and a half years.

Thank you,

Scott
