Southern Utah University's A.P.E.X. Events will be joined this week by non-profit organization Hawkwatch International. This group’s mission is to conserve the environment through education, long-term monitoring, and scientific research on America’s great birds of prey, known as raptors. Join A.P.E.X. Events on September 30, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Hunter Alumni Center.

“This is the first time we have had live animals for A.P.E.X. and I am so excited to meet these special guests," said Dr. Lynn Vartan, director of A.P.E.X. Events at SUU. "I am excited to learn more about their habitat and relationship to our public lands."

We will be joined by two very special guests, Goose and Artemis: birds that have been rescued by Hawkwatch’s rehabilitation efforts. Goose is their resident Peregrine Falcon. She was found on the ground, hungry and unable to hunt, and handed off to Hawkwatch’s experts. Goose is unable to hunt live food and would not survive on her own in the wild. She was named after the goose-like honking sound she makes when vocalizing.

Artemis is a female Western Screech-Owl who was hit by a car while on the hunt for prey. Car accidents are the most common injury among birds of prey. The collision damaged her right eye and severely impacted her capacity to capture prey and perch, leaving her unable to be released back into the wild.

Come learn all about all these beautiful creatures and meet them face to face! HawkWatch will be sharing their efforts and experiences about their migration tracking network set up across the country, how the presence of hawks in the wild serves as a barometer of ecological health, and so much more.

A.P.E.X. Events is SUU’s premier weekly lecture series, with speakers and presenters invited from all areas of the world. While on campus, guests are invited to interact with students and faculty in multiple ways, with opportunities to connect and network in vast areas of scholarship. All A.P.E.X. Events are free and open to the public.

This semester, A.P.E.X. Event presentations will also be streamed live, join the event virtually via Zoom.
