Southern Utah University's A.P.E.X. Events invites novelist Matt Bell to the stage on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at 11:30 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Hunter Alumni Center. Bell’s latest book, “Appleseed'' was named the Best Book of the Summer by the New York Times and has already gained a community of dedicated readers in the short four months since its release.
“It is a privilege to host an author with such a unique voice on SUU's campus," said Dr. Lynn Vartan, director of A.P.E.X. Events at SUU. "His use of symbolism, research and language is beautifully done. I cannot wait to learn more about Matt Bell and what has helped him become the writer he is today.”
Bell is a champion of linguistics, advocate of detailed research, and several times published author. Bell loves to mix and match writing genres that are usually not seen together into epic tales of adventure. “Appleseed” is a speculative fantasy that explores the climate change crisis,
manifest destiny, humanity's exploitation of natural resources, and the small but powerful magic contained within every single apple.
Appleseed is Bell's third novel and eighth book. He is also known for the novels “Scrapper” and “In the House upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods”. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, Esquire, Tin House, Fairy Tale Review, American Short Fiction, Orion, and
many other publications. Bell currently teaches in Creative Writing at the English Department at Arizona State University.
A.P.E.X. Events is SUU’s premier weekly lecture series, with speakers and presenters invited from all areas of the world. While on campus, guests are invited to interact with students and faculty in multiple ways, with opportunities to connect and network in vast areas of scholarship. All A.P.E.X. Events are free and open to the public.
This semester, A.P.E.X. Event presentations will also be streamed live, join the event virtually via Zoom.
