A.P.E.X. Events – SUU’s Premier Event Series is joined next week by professor and author Kevin Gannon. Gannon’s book “Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto” is a response to the current practices in higher education, and an outlook on what we can do to improve. Join A.P.E.X. Events on January 20, 2022 at 11:30 AM in the Great Hall on the campus of SUU. Visit suu.edu/apex for more information on this event - and for the live stream link.
Kevin Gannon's research, writing, and public work centers on opening the conversation about methods and practices of teaching. His attitude is not just about improving higher education, but completely transforming it. Gannon tackles subjects from student impostor syndrome, to cell phone usage in class, to free speech on campus. He translates education ideals into tangible strategies that teachers can use in their classrooms starting anytime.
Gannon’s goal is to change the discussion and reclaim teachers’ essential role in the discourse of higher education. His book, Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto, was published by West Virginia University press in Spring, 2020, as part of their Teaching and Learning in Higher Education series.
Gannon currently serves as Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) and as a Professor of History at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa, where he has taught since 2004.
“We aspire for our students to have valuable learning experiences inside and outside of the classroom, and to instill in them lifelong learning practices," said Dr. Lynn Vartan. "I cannot wait to welcome Kevin Gannon to campus to open the discussion on the ever changing world of education, and ways to service students, teachers, and communities better.”
