Pink and orange graphic that says 'Arts Festival at The Beverley'For the first time, Southern Utah University (SUU) will host an inaugural Arts Festival with the goal of bringing literary, performing, and visual arts together through multiple activities and performances. This new and exciting event will take place on April 9 with festivities happening between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The Arts Festival will be located at the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts, which is home to Utah Shakespeare Festival and Southern Utah Museum of Art. The event is free and open to the campus and community.

“As SUMA has prioritized community engagement, the museum has hosted a range of programs intended to serve the campus of SUU and the Iron County community,” said Jessica Kinsey, executive director of Southern Utah Museum of Art. “Reception has been overwhelmingly positive and demonstrates the need for community engagement beyond the museum. We are proud to be a partner as the Beverley Center develops its own initiatives, creating access to culturally vibrant programming for our community.”

The Arts Festival will include poetry readings by Kolob Canyon Review, a literary and art magazine of Southern Utah University's students, faculty, staff, and alumni. There will also be a variety of entertainment and activities throughout the event, including local artists and vendors offering attendees a great opportunity to buy original art and support local artists. The headlining performance is a collaboration between Larry Keigwin, of the dance group Keigwin + Company, and visual artist Jason Hackenwerth. The two have worked together on projects for Green Box Arts Festival in Colorado and the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. While Larry oversees the choreography of the performance, Jason creates wearable art.

“I’m excited to see the performing and visual arts come alive together,” says Kyrsten Harper, an SUU College of Performing and Visual Arts alumna. “It’s great to see the dance students work with the dance company from New York and I can’t wait to see how it all comes together with the visual artists as well.”

This festival would not be possible without the support of Visit Cedar City • Brian Head, SUU Division of Alumni & Community Relations, SUU Department of Kinesiology & Outdoor Recreation, SUU Department of Theatre, Dance, and Arts Administration, with additional help from the Event Director for Cedar City Corporation.
