Lawrence Mbaki, a junior double majoring in theater arts and music education from the beautiful city of Cape Town, South Africa, shares, “One thing I've learned from ballroom dancing is to focus. It is important to concentrate so a routine and technique can be learned quickly and efficiently. This season we have had a little less time to learn techniques and routines. I have to know when to focus and when to have fun. Dancing is really fun, but it requires the dancer to be sharp and portray the mood of each genre when dancing.”
The SUU Ballroom Dance Company puts on several campus and community events annually including Fall Showcase, Spring Showcase, and Dancing with the Stars. In addition, the company reaches out to the surrounding community frequently doing performances and classes for local organizations. This energetic group will keep you tapping your feet as you are entertained by wonderful music, beautiful costumes, and amazing formation ballroom dancing.
Mbaki goes on to say, “My favorite part of working on this production is this incredible team. I love them all! they work so hard and commit so much time. Chandler Guzzle does such a splendid job coaching us, and gives us a platform to express ourselves. It will be nice to see all of that hard work and time invested pay off. So come see us!”
Lydia Butler, a senior Theatre Arts Education major from South Jordan, Utah, says, “While preparing for this showcase, I have learned new styles such as Nightclub Two Step and refined my skills in other styles such as Viennese Waltz and Tango. My favorite part about working on this production has definitely been the people that I get to work with. I love going to ballroom practice every morning and getting to work hard with the people I care about in an art form that I am so passionate about. Being on Ballroom Team has really shaped my experience at SUU in the best way possible.”
Embrace the magic of ballroom dance on April 1 and 2, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. in the Heritage Center Theater. For ticket information or other questions, please email ballroomdance@suu.edu.
