Southern Utah University held its first Sales Never Fails event this semester, hosted by the Professional Sales program and the Thunderbird Sales Club. Students had minutes to convince the judges to buy the product they were selling. Of the 13 participants, 3 came out on top: Spencer Christensen, Matthew Matheson and Jessica Cuthbert.
“The inaugural sales pitch competition exceeded our expectations,” said Kurt Wankier, director of Professional Sales. “Students from a variety of majors and backgrounds breathed life into an exciting new era of opportunity for Thunderbirds. Interest in our Professional Sales Minor continues to grow and this is evidence of how valuable this minor will be to future T-birds from all academic disciplines.”
Sales Never Fails is open to students of all majors who wish to participate in a sales pitch competition and receive feedback. For this event, students were instructed to study and prepare a sales pitch for the iPhone13 or the Samsung Galaxy S22. During the competition, students had 3 minutes to convince the judges to buy their assigned product. At the end of the event, judges and participants had the opportunity to share their thoughts with everyone, as well as provide feedback, encouragement, and congratulations.
The fast-paced atmosphere of the event offers students an example of what selling is like in the real world. More than that, Sales Never Fails gives participants a valuable experience by helping them have the courage to learn and better prepare themselves for the workforce.
Sales Never Fails, the first of its kind at SUU, is scheduled to continue once a semester and is expected to happen again in the fall. The goal is to provide excellent instruction and practice to students interested in the professional sales field. This event series also allows students to practice delivering a sales pitch before attending the SUU Annual Thunder Sales event where large businesses like Leavitt Group, Zonos, and Novihomecome to hear students present a sales pitch and compete for big prizes.
For this first event, Dr. Paige Gardiner and Nathan McNamee of SUU, and Kadan Westra with Fastenal were the judges to witness the excellent sales pitches from the students and faced the difficult task of naming three winners. The event was also sponsored by Federated Insurance and was deemed a great success.
The Professional Sales program aims to surpass current industry expectations in student development and career readiness and to offer real life experience to students from all over campus.
