SUU’s Department of Art and Design is excited to announce that Kelly Chuning, alumna from the photography program, has just been awarded a full-ride scholarship to Cranbrook Academy of Art starting Fall 2022. This is a massive accomplishment for graduate students studying visual arts.
Kelly Chuning is an interdisciplinary biracial Latinx artist currently based in northwest Montana. She received her BFA in Studio Arts from Southern Utah University. Chuning's work has been shown in group exhibitions nationally and internationally, most notably with JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY in New Orleans, Field Projects Gallery in New York City, and Mark Borghi in Sag Harbor. Her work has also been published in CREATE! Magazine, All SHE Makes, and Friend of The Artist. Her work is in the Southern Utah Museum of Art’s permanent collection and The Gala Awards Exhibition Collection.
Kelly Chuning shares, “During my time in the Art and Design Department at SUU, I was given the autonomy to find my unique voice as an artist while getting critical feedback and mentorship. I was actively encouraged to push my work in a nurturing environment by faculty such as Sam Davis and Russell Wrankle, who I am lucky to call mentors. I would also like to thank Rheana Gardner-Reeves, Andrew Kent-Marvick, Jeff Hanson, former Provost Bradley J. Cook, and Shauna Mendini for always advocating for and believing in my work.”
Cranbrook Academy of Art, located in Detroit, Michigan, is the nation’s top-ranked school devoted exclusively to graduate education in art, architecture, craft, and design. Cranbrook’s simple but radical educational approach was created more than 85 years ago, and its top-ranked programs have consistently produced some of the world’s leading artists, architects, and designers.
Sam Davis, Assistant Professor of Photography at SUU, says, “The thing I remember most about Kelly is her unwavering dedication to her art. From the Intro to Photography class to her amazing senior work she was constantly pushing herself and challenging others. She recently visited my senior capstone class on her way to attend a residency and took time to share her work, critique student work, and share her experiences post-graduation; she continues to exemplify the very best attributes that we can hope to see out of one of our graduates.”
Congratulations to Kelly as she moves forward with this new chapter in her education. She is truly an astounding graduate of the photography program at SUU.
