SUU Jazz EnsembleThe SUU Department of Music’s Jazz Ensembles One, Two, and Three will bring the smooth sound of jazz legends to the stage with their concert on Friday, April 15, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. in the Heritage Center Theater. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for alumni with card, and $5 for youth. SUU faculty/staff (and one guest) and students can attend for free with a valid ID card. Tickets can be purchased at the America First Event Center Box Office, at the door the night of the performance, or online at www.suu.edu/arts.

Dr. Adam Lambert, Director of Bands at SUU, shares, “SUU will feature three jazz ensembles, playing everything from rock, to Latin, to swing! Jazz One, our premiere group will feature outstanding jazz vocalist, Emeline Mortezazadeh, on three tunes, including Fever made famous by Michael Bublé and Mack the Knife by Bobby Darin. The band will also perform Chick Corea's classic La Fiesta.”

Dr. McKay Tebbs, Director of Jazz Ensemble Two, says, “We will be performing one of my favorite songs ever, Spain by Chick Corea. This song is known all over the world for its combination of Spanish sounds with jazz harmony and rhythms. It begins with the whole band playing a slow melodic reference from the Spanish guitar concerto by Joaquín Rodrigo called Concerto de Aranjuez. It then picks up the tempo to a break-neck speed when the main melody comes in. The saxophone section is highlighted during the B section of the song while the rest of the band is keeping time by clapping. The song also includes a special flute feature performed by SUU music student, Mia Clark. My group has worked very hard to prepare for this concert and I am very excited for them to play Spain during the performance.”

Chris Kuhlemeier, Director of Jazz Ensemble Three, states, “They will be showcasing combo arrangements of works by Dizzy Gillespie, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Harry James, and more. The newest ensemble in the SUU Jazz program features performers with unique talents across multiple instruments who have been focusing extensively on improvisation in the combo setting. We are most excited to showcase our ensemble alongside Jazz Ensembles One and Two.”

Be serenaded by SUU’s Jazz Ensembles One, Two, and Three on Friday, April 15, 2022 in the Heritage Center Theater. For more information about arts events at SUU, please visit www.suu.edu/arts.
