SUU Offers Continuing Education Courses for Utah K-12 TeachersTo address a 2021 Utah State Board of Education (USBE) highly supported professional development literacy initiative, Southern Utah University’s K-12 Programs has been offering 5000-level Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) continuing education university credit to Utah partner districts and schools. This training is beneficial to teachers as it allows them to receive graduate level credit which they can in turn apply for lane changes and pay raises.

According to a USBE LETRS Fact Sheet, “LETRS helps educators improve literacy in the state and advance their knowledge and skills in the science of reading”; due to, “data [that] suggests many students [are] not achieving the expected reading skills necessary for future academic success.”

“LETRS training will not only improve literacy in our state, first through learners taking the training, but then through their students learning from them,” said Dr. Tony Pellegrini, chair of Teacher Education at SUU. “We’re excited to be part of the state’s solution!”

Additionally, University credit is also an excellent recruiting tool for districts and schools to encourage their teachers to participate in LETRS training.

Ashley Peterson, Iron County School District’s Elementary Literacy and Title I Coordinator said, “It was great for our teachers to receive 12 SUU credits for their participation in LETRS professional learning. We look forward to our district continuing to benefit from this crucial literacy training not only for our teachers, but our ultimate beneficiaries, students.”

Districts can partner with SUU for their learners to earn 12 continuing education credits for only $252!
