By creating tomorrow’s university in today’s world, Southern Utah University has again received national recognition as one of the renowned Colleges of Distinction. For the 2022-2023 year, SUU received additional recognition for business, education, engineering, nursing, career development, and military support.
For over 20 years, Colleges of Distinction’s selection process has consisted of rigorous research and interviews, examining each institution’s freshman experience and retention rates, general education programs, career development, student satisfaction, and more. Colleges and universities are accepted annually based on their adherence to the Four Distinctions: Student Engagement, Teaching, Community, and Outcomes.
“When we focus all of our attention on how schools stack up against one another, we lose track of what really matters: the students themselves,” said Wes Creel, Founder of Colleges of Distinction. “Every student has individual needs and their own environment in which they’re most likely to thrive. We want to extend our praise to the schools that prioritize and cater to students’ goals. We’re inspired by the ways in which SUU immerses students in their fields, all while fostering a welcoming community that will support them through and beyond their college years.”
SUU’s business, education, engineering, and nursing programs had to demonstrate stability for students, dedication to advisement and practical experience, and offer multiple disciplines or opportunities for collaborative work to receive this designation.
With the mission of helping students from all backgrounds, identities, and experiences find the best well-rounded, inspiring undergraduate education, Colleges of Distinction also looks at the resources provided to students outside of the classroom. This year SUU received additional recognition for career development and military support.
The career development SUU provides its students offers opportunities in career exploration and preparation, and accessibility to programs and training. The University has shown dedication to employer relations to aid students in transitioning into the workforce, making it fit for the recognition.
SUU not only acknowledges the unique challenges military students face but works to welcome and support these students through providing flexible and accessible options and faculty training. The University also provides campus activities and increases community support for military students.
SUU provides a personalized, career-ready experience that prepares students to be successful upon graduation. The valuable educational opportunities ensure students enter the job market with a competitive advantage. SUU fosters small, personalized classes with a 19:1 student to faculty ratio and has more than 140 undergraduate and 18 graduate and certificate programs.
