In celebration of Southern Utah University’s 125th Birthday, SUU, in partnership with Visit Cedar City • Brian Head, is hosting a series of guided experiences. These tours will showcase the University as never before. Exploring the past, present, and future of SUU, these guided experiences are a true celebration of the spirit of our founders. The September event will be a visit to the SUU Observatory.
Located adjacent to the SUU farm and dedicated in 1980, the Ashcroft Observatory has offered views of the heavens to members of both the SUU and local communities for over 40 years. The Observatory demonstrates what can be achieved when communities come together, as it was built by donations from the public. Recently updated with a new pointing and tracking system, the observatory will continue to provide observational opportunities to the community for years to come. In this tour, we will observe the Moon (bring your phone to take a great picture!) as well as Saturn and star clusters and nebulae in the heart of the Milky Way. We will also observe constellations and discuss recent developments in astronomy, including the new James Webb Space Telescope.
Dr. Cameron Pace, associate professor of physics and Ashcroft Observatory director will be the guide. The tour will be held on Thursday, September 1 and again on Thursday, September 15. Both tours will begin at 9:00 p.m. at the observatory, which is located on the hill just south of the SUU Farm. If you're using Google maps or something similar, be aware that the Observatory is NOT located on Hillcrest Drive, as that is in an adjacent subdivision, and you'll end up at someone's house! Rather, the Observatory is located at the end of Observatory Road. SUU Guided Experiences are free and open to all.
In 1897 the founders of Southern Utah University believed so strongly in the power of education that they risked their lives and finances for the privilege of building and hosting an institution of higher education in rural Cedar City, Utah. Their determination and grit are woven into the cultural fabric of SUU. SUU’s enduring legacy is built on 125 years of fortitude, determination, and community triumph. Celebrate with us as we explore our rich history and prepare for a bright future.
