Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: Southern Utah University’s Department of Art & Design is pleased to announce Susanna Herrmann its new Assistant Professor of Graphic Design. Herrmann comes to SUU from her hometown of Bloomington, Indiana, where she has taught at Indiana University’s Eskanzi School of Art, Architecture + Design since 2019. Susanna holds a Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from that same institution and a Bachelor of Arts in German and Philosophy, cum laude from Georgetown University.
“We are delighted to have Susanna joining the Art & Design faculty,” remarks Jeffrey Hanson, Art Department Chair and Professor of Graphic Design. “Her energy and intellect will help students to master the complexities of client-based design practice and prepare them for their future careers.”
SUU’s focus on student development is what drew Susanna to the university. “I look forward to working with students who are studying design and those who are simply interested in the field,” she says. “I am also excited to work with and learn from SUU’s excellent faculty.”
Ms. Herrmann brings an extensive background to the Art & Design program, with experience in typography and letterpress printing. Her sophisticated creative practice involves the study of symbols and experimental processes in photographic film which bring a unique perspective to the classroom. Graphic wit - how designers utilize visual language to make puns or engage with viewers in a witty way - is Susanna’s favorite thing to teach because of how influential it can be to the viewer. She enjoys seeing how students engage their own senses of humor in their work.
“One of the most interesting things about graphic design is how all-encompassing and dynamic it is,” continues Herrmann. “Everyone engages with design, even if they aren’t aware of it at the moment. Graphic design is a visual language that can be used to communicate about anything, and each project offers a new challenge for communicating effectively and individually.”
Susanna will begin teaching in SUU’s fall semester which beings on Wednesday, August 31, 2022. For more information about the SUU Department of Art & Design, visit www.suu.edu/pva/art.
