Southern Utah University alumna, Bredeca Anthony, is continuing her education by beginning a Master of Science degree, or MSc (the European equivalent of the American MS degree) at the London School of Economics and Political Sciences.
Hailing from Malaysia, Anthony served as an International Student Ambassador during her time at SUU. This gave her the opportunity to interact with students from all over the world. In addition to inviting prospective students, Anthony was also a part of their transition to life at SUU. She helped to plan events and provided international students with any resources they needed. In 2021, she was featured in SUU’s “You Are Welcome Here” video, encouraging potential T-Birds to come and join the flock.
“SUU is special because it has a close-knit community,” said Anthony. Coming from Malaysia to a small town in a foreign country, SUU has helped me find lifelong friends and a home away from home through amazing committees and organizations. I hope in the future the University will continue to provide a welcoming space for everyone, just like they did for me.”
Along with her services as an ISA, Anthony was dedicated to her major in information systems and her passion for women in technology.
“I met Bredeca during one of the shoots for “You Are Welcome Here,” and was so impressed with her smile and cheerful demeanor,” said Nicole Funderburk, director of international marketing and recruitment for SUU. “She has such a zest and drive. I could tell she was a bright student but also very dynamic.”
SUU’s International Affairs Office works tirelessly in aiding international students. They partner with people and organizations from around the world to spread the word to students about the unique opportunity an education at SUU provides. In addition, they contribute to the unique campus culture and student life SUU offers where students can study in a safe environment and still remain in close proximity to many international destinations. SUU representatives travel to various countries across the globe and visit with students in different countries via WhatsApp and Zoom to talk about all things SUU.
“It is exhilarating to me to daily interact with students from over 77 countries right on our campus,” Funderburk added. “I love hearing their stories, their accents and seeing how much we really do have in common.”
Students from all over the globe are welcome at Southern Utah University. Currently, SUU is home to 748 students from 77 countries and territories around the world. By 2025, SUU hopes to host over a thousand international students and have the same amount traveling on study abroad trips. Along with excelling in their classes, international students help make campus a more diverse and wonderful place.
Graduates are constantly going above and beyond in their respective fields long after graduation. Embarking all across the country and the world to pursue their dreams. Such is the Thunderbird way. Learn more about the Office of International Affairs at SUU.
