In celebration of Southern Utah University’s 125th Birthday, SUU, in partnership with the Visit Cedar City • Brian Head is hosting a series of guided experiences. February's event will be a guided tour of the Utah Shakespeare Festival Prop Shop.
While magic occurs each year on the stages of the Utah Shakespeare Festival, months before that magic begins in the production facilities. We will “raise the curtain” on the workings of the scenic and prop studios in this tour, including a glimpse into the warehouses where 60+ years of theatrical costumes and props reside. Get a chance to talk with some of the department heads who make the magic happen behind the scenes and see glimpses of projects already in process for the 2023 season. This tour will include viewings of some artifacts that shed light on the evolution of the Festival.
Ben Hohman, props director, and Marielle Boneau, assistant props director, and Richard Girtain, production manager/interim scenery director at the Utah Shakespeare Festival will guide the tour on Thursday, February 2 at 7 p.m. and again on Thursday, February 16 at 7 p.m. Meet at the USF Production Studio located at 1635 N Bulldog Road in Cedar City. The tour will last approximately one hour. SUU Guided Experiences are free and open to all.
In 1897 the founders of Southern Utah University believed so strongly in the power of education that they risked their lives and finances for the privilege of building and hosting an institution of higher education in rural Cedar City, Utah. Their determination and grit are woven into the cultural fabric of SUU. SUU’s enduring legacy is built on 125 years of fortitude, determination, and community triumph. Celebrate with us as we explore our rich history and prepare for a bright future.
