Southern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA) will feature the work of graduating SUU students through the 2023 Senior BFA Exhibition which opens on March 20 and continues through Saturday, April 28. Accompanying the start of the exhibition will be an opening reception on Tuesday, March 28 from 6-8:00 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public as students share their experiences and artwork.

From 2D illustration to 3D installation, branding to book design, the Senior BFA Exhibition displays capstone projects by 30 senior Bachelor of Fine Arts students in the SUU Department of Art + Design. It encompasses an exciting range of media and subject matter. Each artist includes a written statement from each student that reveals their ability to conceive, plan, and execute a body of work appropriate for a professional exhibition.

Exhibiting students begin their projects in the fall semester with proposals and initial drafts before completing their work in the first weeks of the spring semester. This timeline gives students the experience of what their real-world process will look like when they move on to the professional sphere.

Headshot of Erin Byrne, Graphic Design student.Erin Byrne is a Graphic Design major from Lehi, Utah. For her project, she chose to create a snowboard brand in order to showcase her personal design style, inspired by the outdoors and the dynamic sport. “My favorite part of the design process is when you see a piece through to production,” she says. “It is so neat to see something you designed digitally come to life and then see people use or interact with it, especially in such a beautiful space like SUMA.”

Erin chose to study Graphic Design at SUU because she has always enjoyed art. “I wanted to pursue something where I would learn new skills and develop myself professionally and intellectually,” Byrne continues, “Graphic design was the perfect balance for me of getting to express myself creatively while also learning a new skill set.”

The BFA exhibition is the crowning achievement of Art & Design students which represents four years of tireless work and development as well as a showcase of what the graduates are capable of as emerging professionals.

“This show will be amazing,” Erin says. “There are some really talented artists that are displaying artwork, and all of our projects are really unique and different. I hope people take their time to explore all of the art and experience what we have made.”

The 2023 Senior BFA Exhibition will run from March 20 to April 28. SUMA is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. In conjunction with SUU’s Festival of Excellence, visitors can join select exhibiting students to learn more about their artwork during a series of gallery talks held on March 28 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. To learn more about Arts Events at SUU, visit www.suu.edu/arts.
