The Sorenson Legacy Foundation Center for Hope, also known as Southern Utah University Child Care, has been honored with a “High Quality” rating from the State of Utah. This recognition underscores the center's dedication to providing exceptional care and support to SUU student-parents and their children.
The evaluation process encompassed four key categories: Health and Safety, Learning Environments and Relationships, Leadership and Professional Development, and Management and Administration. SUU Child Care demonstrated excellence across all areas, with four of the six classrooms achieving perfect scores in numerous subsections.
“We are so proud of our staff and their consistent efforts to create a safe space for children to learn and grow in, allowing our SUU student-parents to pursue education with the assurance that their children are receiving the best care,” said Tayzha Huxford, center director.
In recognition of this achievement, the center will receive additional funding totaling $16,257 over a year. This funding, provided by the Department of Workforce Services (DWS), will bolster the center’s ability to maintain its high-quality standards and further enrich its programs and services.
Kathy Wyatt, former SUU First Lady, dropped out of college to support her husband through law school and raise their son. Money was tight and they were worried about student loans. With her understanding of how difficult it can be to raise a family while attending school, she decided to step up and address this problem by championing an on-campus childcare center, which opened its doors to students and their children in the fall of 2020.
"During the past four years the SUU Child Care Center has been operating, it has serviced hundreds of student-parents and their children,” said Kathy Wyatt. “Most of these parents would not have obtained their degrees without the help they received from the Child Care Center. It gives Scott and me great satisfaction to know the Sorenson Legacy Foundation Center for Hope continues to achieve its purpose of changing and improving families' lives. However, the real credit for the success of this program belongs to the extraordinary teachers and staff at the center. Their influence will impact students and their families for generations to come. I can't think of anyone who deserves this High-Quality Award more than they do!”
This facility offers on-campus child care, a preschool lab, and comprehensive parent and family support services. By attaining this prestigious award, SUU reaffirms its commitment to the well-being of its students. With flexible care hours and a convenient on-campus location, this center stands as an affordable and secure option for SUU students and their children.
