Seven Students Nominated for Board of Trustees Scholarship

Southern Utah University is pleased to announce the 2024 finalists for the prestigious Board of Trustees Scholarship. This scholarship, funded by SUU's Board of Trustees, is awarded to one outstanding SUU student at the end of their junior year. The finalists, nominated by their respective colleges, represent the best of SUU and showcase exceptional dedication to their academic pursuits.

Beverley Taylor Sorenson College of Education and Human Development

Karlee LopourKarlee Lopour has been named the finalist for the Beverley Taylor Sorensen College of Education and Human Development. Majoring in Social work and minoring in Early Childhood Development and Family Services, Lopour Plans to pursue a master's in social work and become a licensed clinical social worker, continuing to make a difference in her community. Originally from Nephi, Utah, she chose SUU for its intimate atmosphere and fond memories of attending SUU football games with her dad. Lopour is grateful to Clint Broadbent, Maren Hirschi and Brad Simpson in the family life and human development department.

College of Engineering and Computational Science

Bram StultzBram Michael Stults has been named the finalist for the SUU Board of Trustees Scholarship for the College of Engineering and Computational Science. Stults plans to declare a data science major, a new mathematics department major opening in the fall of 2024. He is currently enrolled as a mathematics - actuarial science emphasis major and plans to search for opportunities in Utah, aiming to work in or with the public sector in data science in hopes of inspiring positive change. Born in Cedar City, he moved back to Utah from Lengdorf, Germany in 2022 to attend SUU in person. Stults chose SUU for its perfect class sizes, talented faculty and beautiful campus. He is especially grateful to Dr. Nathan Barker and Dr. Rick Brown.

College of Health Sciences

Joseph ClingerJoseph Caleb Clinger has been named the finalist for the College of Health Sciences. Majoring in Human Nutrition with a minor in Chemistry, Clinger plans to apply to medical schools to become a doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. Originally from Blanding, Utah, he chose SUU for its strong science programs and smaller sizes. Clinger is grateful to Matthew Schmidt, Celesta Lyman, Sarah Brock, Dr. Kim Weaver and Dr. Nathan Werner for their example and inspiration.

College of Humanities and Social Science

Taya BakerTaya Baker has been named the finalist for the College of Humanities and Social Science. Majoring in creative writing and minoring in French, Baker plans to find a job in writing, pursuing journalism or editing while writing books. Originally from Heber, Utah, Baker chose SUU for its suitability to achieve her dream of becoming an author.

College of Performing and Visual Arts

Brady PoorBrady Poor has been named the finalist for the College of Performing and Visual Arts. Majoring in commercial music, Poor plans to pursue a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies. Originally from Herriman, Utah, he chose to attend SUU due to the small campus, his familiarity with some music faculty and his early acceptance. Poor is grateful to Dr. Ostrowsky’s for Sociology in Deviance, Dr. Tebbs for music technology classes and music ensembles, including the jazz combo he directs.

Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business

Kylee RhodesKylee Rhodes Pyfer has been named the finalist for the Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business. Majoring in accounting, Pyfer plans to get her MAcc and pursue a CPA certification, aiming for a career in the Audit and Business Advisory field of Accounting. Originally from Saratoga Springs, Utah, she chose SUU for its close-knit community and professors who care. She is grateful for Melinda Ford for ACCT 2010 and Jon Lee for tax class and their impact.

Walter Maxwell Gibson College of Natural Sciences

Kaden JensenKaden Jensen has been named the finalist for the Walter Maxwell Gibson College of Sciences. Double majoring in biology and chemistry, Jensen plans to attend an MD/PhD program to pursue CRISPR research and patient care. Originally from Saint George, UT, he chose SUU for its small class sizes and intimate education environment, noting that he is happy he cano consider his professors as close friends. Jensen particularly enjoyed biochemistry with Professor Howard and various chemistry courses with Professor Prater.
