Southern Utah University Police Department added two new positions and refilled three vacancies in the last few months. The five new officers were recently sworn into service.
“All of these officers have a strong desire to help SUU Police and SUU to help create an atmosphere of learning, safety, and inclusion,” said SUU Police Chief Carlos Medina. “Every single one of these individuals have the same approachable demeanor and willingness to help our organization be the best in the state.”
The new officers include John Hill, Osualdo Fuentes, Kasen Lassen, Marshall Gunter and Jacob Jackson. Hill, Gunter and Lassen have joined as transfers from Cedar City Police Department.
Lassen started his law enforcement career at SUU Police and came back to the department. In his free time, he loves to hunt, be outdoors, and spend time with family. Lassen is always looking for ways to improve and help others.
Hill began his law enforcement career in northern Utah and eventually settled in Cedar City. With ten years of law enforcement experience, Hill has a wealth of knowledge and skills that will help SUU Police better serve the SUU community. In his spare time, Hill spends time with his supportive family and is working to learn Latin.
Fuentes put himself through the police academy and was eventually hired by SUU Police. On his days off, Fuentes spends time with his family; he also helps his dad with auto mechanics. His career plan is to be an investigator within the organization.
A native of Cedar City and an SUU alum, Gunter has been in law enforcement in Cedar City for about three years and made the move to SUU Police because he feels he can make a difference in students' lives. Gunter is married and puts family at the front of everything. He also loves mountain biking and learning defensive tactics.
Jackson recently completed his police training and is now in the field training program. He is married, and loves being around his wife. Jackson is passionate about mental health and about helping others. He likes to target shoot with guns and bows, hunt, play the occasional video game and be with his family.
Tiger Funk, SUU Vice President of Operations, stated, “Having an appropriate number of post-certified officers and other qualified individuals is one key to successful outcomes for emergency management and public safety. By onboarding our newest officers, we have made significant steps toward securing the resources necessary to provide a safer environment on the SUU campus.”
SUU President Mindy Benson has also expressed her prioritization of keeping campus safe and in line with the university’s plan for public safety.
SUU takes great pride in their police force, who are there to educate and help students despite not teaching in a classroom. SUU offers its thanks to its officers for their service.
