Southern Utah University’s (SUU) Civil Engineering Program hasA civil engineering student works on a project been accredited from the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET). ABET is a non-governmental nonprofit organization that accredits applied and natural science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology programs at universities worldwide. Graduating from an ABET accredited program has historically been the educational standard for engineering licensure.

“ABET accreditation benefits SUU's civil engineering program in several ways,” said Dr. Matthew Roberts, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Computational Sciences. “It validates the quality and rigor of the program, ensures that graduates are eligible for professional engineering licensure, and can
increase enrollment by attracting more students to an accredited program.”

In addition to the newly accredited Civil Engineering Program, SUU’s Computer Science, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, and Mechanical Engineering programs have all previously received ABET accreditation.

The accreditation process involved a comprehensive review of the program, a self-study report submitted by SUU, and an on-site visit by a team of peer reviewers. ABET also requires students to graduate from the program seeking accreditation before the institution can apply, with accreditation being applied retroactively to graduates once obtained by the program.

“We had six students who graduated with civil engineering degrees before we applied for accreditation," said Dr. Roberts. “Their degrees are now accredited, but we are very grateful for the faith they placed in our program to pursue the civil engineering degree before we were officially accredited.”
