SUU has released an updated wellness resources list for the 2024-25 school year, in order to ease the minds of students and parents alike during the midterms season.
The priority at SUU has always been the wellbeing of the students, and with multiple offices and people dedicated to that mission. Students should check in with their academic advisor at least once or twice a semester to make sure their academics are consistent with their major/minor requirements. Freshmen also have ACES (Assistant Coaches for Excellence and Success) upon orientation at SUU, who offers social support from the perspective of a student who’s been attending the university for longer. ACEs can be found in The Nest in the Sharwan Smith Student Center. Students are also encouraged to join clubs or various campus organizations to enrich their experience at SUU.
There are various offices on campus that provide specialized services to students as needed.
The Career Center is driven to helping students pave their own path to a successful future in their field of choice.
“The Career Center has a three-fold mission.” Director of the Career Center, Brandon Street, offered his comments. “First, we want to help them make confident decisions on what they want to do for a major and career. Second, we aim to help students make meaningful connections to help them with their next step after graduation. Third, we strive to teach students the skills necessary to successfully apply for career jobs or graduate school. Recent research has shown that students' top concern is how their current education prepares them for their post-graduation careers. The Career Center is designed to help students intentionally prepare for their post-graduation goals."
International Student and Scholar Services and the Office of Learning Abroad offer support to T-Birds from around the world and as T-Birds study abroad. Jamie Orton, Executive Director of International Student and Scholar Services, offered her comments.
“SUU International Affairs is dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for more than 950 international students from over 90 countries and territories. We offer a variety of services through the International Student and Scholar Services Office (ISSS) to assist students from the moment they apply, and continue throughout their entire academic journey at SUU.” ISSS services range from visa support, housing, and orientation, to immigration guidance, employment help, and cultural integration.
Orton continues, “International Affairs consistently achieves the highest student retention rate of any population on campus, and we are proud of the work our team and the International Student Ambassadors do to promote global awareness and create opportunities for international and US students to connect through events, showcases, and excursions. We invite all students to get involved in our internationally themed events to enrich their experience at SUU.”
The Disability Resource Center is able to help students make any necessary learning accommodations.
“The Disability Resource Center at SUU is a vital support system, offering students the accommodations and resources necessary for their academic and personal success. It emphasizes individualized attention and guarantees equal access to educational opportunities, promoting a more supportive learning environment,” said Carmen Alldredge, director of the DRC.
There are several other significant resources available to students:
- Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is here to help students struggling to overcome any mental challenges as they progress through their education. The Health and Wellness Office is available to help students with various physical ailments.
